Episode 5 Recap: Tournament 4, Atlanta, GA
An electric and pumped-up crowd greets the nine remaining Toughest Cowboy competitors as they walked onto the dirt at Gwinnett Center. Steven Dent is relieved he earned immunity last week, as his badly sprained foot is going to handicap his performance. Commissioner Tommy Joe Lucia warns the group that they do not want to meet Mark Fisher in the Knockout Round. Apparently, Tommy Joe is sure Fisher will be will be on the Knockout Round again this week.
Bareback Bronc Round
Confident veteran Bandy Murphy starts things off this week with a not-so-pretty ride and 73 points. Murphy shakes his head at the performance and walks back to the locker room. Erik Wolford, on the other hand, continues to define the word “try” as he lays back and cranks out an 83-point ride.
Mark Fisher apologizes for his berating of the judges last week, then climbs aboard and notches a 71 in a very sloppy ride. Fisher is a bit more composed this week, but still is not happy with the score. Evidently he feels he should be given points for effort, not just proficiency. Next up is Steve Woolsey, who, prior to entering the Toughest Cowboy competition, had only ridden on two bareback horses — and it shows. Admittedly his worst event, Woolsey makes it to the 8-second mark and grabs 67 points.
Ben Londo has his hands full with a very rank horse, but in true Londo-style rides the full 8 seconds and tallies 73 points. Charlie Barker gets out of control early and ends up with both his feet on the same side of the horse, but does manage a full ride and 77 points. Steven Dent doesn’t show any signs of his injured ankle and spurs his way to a solid 78-point ride.
After sawing off his cast, three-year Toughest Cowboy veteran Chad Eubank is ready to ride — and ride he does. Eubank posts a 79, enough to put the Cleburne, TX cowboy in 2nd place. Last up is Dusty Elkinton. Elkinton starts out looking good, but things go downhill fast as he gets turned and rides side-saddle for just 70 points. Elkinton is already seeing the writing on the wall, and it says “Knockout Round.”
Saddle Bronc Round
Steve Woolsey executes a good saddle bronc ride to the tune of 76 points, which keeps him in the middle of the pack, and safe from the Knockout Round. Erik Wolford gets a strong horse that does its best to yank him out of the saddle. Wolford holds his own but it’s not pretty, and when the wild ride is over he only manages 69 points.
Chad Eubank shows his experience as a three-event cowboy and puts together one of the best saddle bronc rides of the year. At the end of the ride the horse crashes into the fence, taking both itself and Eubank to dirt. Both horse and rider get to their feet and show no ill effects from the crash. Eubank notches an 82, and moves into first place. Big man Charlie Barker turns in a nice ride and actually jumps off and lands on his feet this week with 78 points.
Ben Londo, son of a four-time NFR saddle bronc qualifier, keeps up the family tradition with an 80-point ride, moving him into third place after two rounds. Bandy Murphy’s ride is another story. Murphy draws a weak horse and can only manage 60 points. You can tell Murphy is frustrated with the livestock. In his post-ride interview Murphy states, “This is really starting to get under my skin…how I’m drawing is getting old.” With only 133 points after two rounds, the 2007 Toughest Cowboy Champion could be headed to the Knockout Round. Dusty Elkinton fares much worse as his horse stalls in the chute, then takes an unexpected lunge, setting Elkinton up to get bucked off. Which he is — short of the whistle with only 34 points.
Steven Dent is showing signs of his injured foot now, as he barely makes it through his 74-point ride. Mark Fisher has clearly lost his focus as he gets bucked off at 5.5 seconds. With only 29 points in the saddle bronc riding, Fisher is dead last going into the bull riding round.
Bull Riding Round
Once again bull riding seems to separate the men from the boys. Bronc riding superstar Erik Wolford has yet to ride one of his bulls to the 8-second mark and doesn’t get it done in Atlanta either, gathering in just 57 points. Steve Woolsey on the other hand, has ridden every bull thus far, and does it again with a whopping 88-point ride. Woolsey punctuates the ride by tossing his hat, and gets a little guff from Coach Cody Snyder on his weak hat throw.
Chad Eubank is hurting everywhere as he grabs hold of his bull. Eubank looks like he has him rode, but can’t make the whistle and ends up with 68 points. Charlie Barker also can’t piece together a full ride as the bull jerks the rope right out of the northwestern cowboy’s hand and leaves him with 42 points.
Mark Fisher is tense and mentally drained as he prepares for his turn. For a moment it looks like Fisher might avoid the Knockout Round, but it’s not to be as he bucks off at 6.3 seconds with 56 points. Steven Dent gives a lot of effort in his ride, but it’s not enough for the injured Nebraska cowboy and he finishes his night in seventh place.
Ben Londo has shown definite improvements in his bull riding as the season has progressed, and tonight is no exception as he racks up 80 points. Bandy Murphy has been irritated all night at the animals he’s drawn, but shows no signs of it in the bull riding as he cranks out an 82-point ride. Proving he can ride under pressure once again, Murphy finishes the night in fourth place, well out of danger of the Knockout Round.
Last up is Dusty Elkinton, who has been stuck at the bottom all night. It seems Elkinton is destined for the Knockout Round as he looses the handle early and gathers only 62 points. Elkinton is clearly unhappy with his performance as he awaits the inevitable news that he will be riding one more bull it Atlanta.
Knockout Round
Spike TV host Brandi Williams calls out Chad Eubank, Ben Londo, Erik Wolford, and Steve Woolsey as the top cowboys for the night. Wolford had the best score in bareback bronc riding, Eubank in saddle bronc riding, and Woolsey in bull riding. But Oregon’s own Ben Londo is the top cowboy for the night with 233 points.
Both Mark Fisher and Dusty Elkinton know they are in the Knockout Round, and they don’t shake hands, or even look at each other for that matter. They just saunter off to prepare for battle.
Coach Pete Hawkins gives Fisher a pep talk as he straps in for his ride. Fisher draws a weak bull but gets it done, lasting the full 8 seconds and securing 79 points. Dusty Elkinton knows he must turn in a full ride or his season is over. Elkinton gets the nod from Commissioner Tommy Joe Lucia that it’s his turn to go. Elkinton stays with the bull for a while, but with one quick twist gets bucked to the dirt. Elkinton can’t control his anger and throws his bull rope before stomping back to the locker room.
Back on the dirt Elkinton is still angry about his performance as Brandi Williams says, “You rode hard, but it wasn’t enough.” So the family man from Missouri has to hang up his jersey and bid farewell to his chance at the Toughest Cowboy Championship and the deed to his own ranch. Meanwhile, Mark Fisher has prevailed in the Knockout Round for the third week in a row and is now on his way to 2009 Toughest Cowboy Playoffs.
