Episode 4 Recap: Tournament 3, Columbus, OH

The ever-diminishing group of Toughest Cowboy contestants gets a pep-talk from the coaches this week. Cowboy coach Pete Hawkins reminds the injured cowboys to “stay tough” and ride through the pain. Coach Cody Snyder isn’t as diplomatic as he calls out Ben Londo and Steven Dent on their poor showing in the bull riding thus far. Snyder reminds them this is a 3-event competition and if they don’t step it up they’re going to get knocked out and sent home.

Bareback Bronc Round
Newcomer Mark Fisher survived the Knockout Round last week and he starts off the bareback bronc riding with a sloppy 67-point ride. Fisher almost immediately begins berating the judges on his score and clearly thinks he deserves better than a 67. Next up is family man Dusty Elkinton, who’s got the entire family in tow to watch him ride. Hoping for a good showing while his wife and two young daughters look on, Elkinton gets a bad draw—the horse doesn’t give him a lot to work with—and finishes with a 69.

Cool and quiet Chad Eubank, sporting a bright pink cast on his hand to protect his re-attached finger, starts out good but rattles loose short of the whistle to notch only 69 points, tying Elkinton. Steve Woolsey, who’s been working with Coach Hawkins on his bareback bronc riding, gets the tar yanked out of him and manages only 54 points, but fortunately avoids injury. It looks like a tough night in Columbus.

On the other end of the spectrum, the unbreakable Erik Wolford shows a lot of style as he flaps his way to an 87, and the top of the leaderboard. All-business Bandy Murphy chalks up an 83 to stay right behind Wolford. Australian Lance Kelly finds his groove, and with his wife looking on from the stands, tallies 80 points.

Steven Dent, who finished 2008 ranked 2nd in the ProRodeo World standings, puts on another display of his world-class abilities and knocks Murphy down to number 3 with an 84-point ride. At the end of his ride, Dent goes crashing into the fence and is clearly in pain as he hops to the dirt. Dent cannot walk on his left foot and is helped directly to the sports medicine room. If Dent can’t compete by the next round, his ride on Toughest Cowboy will be over.

Saddle Bronc Round
Mark Fisher continues his complaining right into the saddle bronc round where he scores a miserable 47 points. Fisher takes his gripe to anyone that will listen, including fellow competitor Charlie Barker who tells Fisher, “Forget about it and ride your bull.”

Barker, on the other hand puts together a nice 84-point ride and narrowly escapes injury for the second week in a row as he goes over the handlebars of his bronc and lands right in the path of the charging horse. Chad Eubank and Ben Londo both turn in nice rides, and Steve Woolsey turns in his best saddle bronc ride of the season with an 81. Aussie Lance Kelly showed up to win, but with 74 points is not gaining much ground.

Erik Wolford continues to stay in contention with a 79. But the big story of the night is Steven Dent. Dent re-appears from the sports medicine room, hops up the steps to the bucking chutes and rides his way to a 74 to keep himself in third place. Dent is helped out of the arena again, but has shown he can ride through injury.

Bull Riding Round
Dusty Elkinton gives a wave to his two girls while he prepares for his bull ride. Having his family in attendance must have inspired him, because Elkinton saves himself from the Knockout Round with a well-executed 84-point ride.

Chad Eubank doesn’t quite make the whistle, but with 68 points is safely in the middle of the pack. Leader Erik Wolford and second place Charlie Barker both fail to complete their rides and end up with scores in the 40s. Bandy Murphy turns in a shocking 27 on a bull that, if ridden, could have pushed Murphy toward the top of the leaderboard.

Mark Fisher is clearly pre-occupied with his distain for the judges and, as his bull goes into a spin, loses hold at 4.7 seconds for a score of 35 points. Fisher vows that if he makes another trip to the Knockout Round he will punish whomever he faces. We get a pretty good idea of who that will be after Lance Kelly nods his head and turns in a dismal 41 points.

World-ranked bull rider Steve Woolsey does what he does best and turns in a smokin’ 77-point ride. Coach Cody Snyder squares Ben Londo away as he climbs aboard his bull. Londo has yet to make the 8-second buzzer during the 2009 Toughest Cowboy season. Coach Synder must know what he’s doing, because Londo makes it the full 8-seconds, and scores an 81 to boot.

The highlight of the night is when Steven Dent, who suffered a badly sprained (if not broken) ankle in the bareback bronc riding, climbs aboard his bull. Like Ben Londo, Dent has not ridden a bull this season, but turns in the best ride of the night with 87 points. Dent can’t walk without assistance, but has just ridden his way to his first tournament win of 2009.

Knockout Round
After announcing Steven Dent the Tournament winner, Spike TV host Brandi Williams calls Mark Fisher, Lance Kelly and Bandy Murphy to step forward from the rest of the cowboys. Had Murphy not won the previous tournament and received immunity from the Knockout Round, he would have been going against Mark Fisher this week. Murphy’s good luck is Kelly’s bad luck—he will have to do battle with Fisher to see who gets to stay on tour. As Kelly’s wife looks on, the gate swings open and 4.7 seconds into the ride Kelly gets bucked off. If Fisher rallies, things look dire for the Australian.

Mark Fisher has been frustrated all night and is now backed into a corner for the second week in a row. Fisher proves he can handle pressure and completes his ride for a total of 80 points, offering only two words to the judges as he exits the arena: “Take that.”

Lance Kelly knows his season is over. His dream of winning his own ranch in his adopted country has disappeared. As Brandi Williams delivers the bad news, Kelly (in true cowboy fashion) tips his hat, thanks his wife, and walks back to the locker room to hang up his jersey.
