World Champ Joins Toughest Cowboy December 5, 2007
In 2006 B.J. Schumacher reached the crowning achievement for a professional cowboy, he won the world title in bull riding. If that wasn’t enough he did while setting a new Wrangler NFR bull riding earnings record of $142,644. He won his first Wrangler NFR average title with a total score of 696.5 points on eight head, becoming the first bull rider since Blue Stone in 2001 to ride eight head at the Wrangler NFR. He also became the first Wisconsin bull rider to win a world title and first Wisconsin cowboy since Jack Buschbom won the bareback riding title in 1949, 1959-60 to win a world title.
Now Schumacher sets his sights on another prize — the Toughest Cowboy title and the deed to Jäger Ranch. To most it seems odd that an accomplished bull rider would try his hand at the three-discipline Toughest Cowboy competition. However, Schumacher is no stranger to bareback and saddle bronc riding.
In high school, he competed in seven events that included bareback, saddle bronc, bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping and cutting. He competed in bareback riding for three years and saddle bronc riding for five years but said they were more nerve wracking events than bull riding because a horse could hurt you worse in the chutes. He competed in bareback riding in the PRCA his permit year and it was probably his best event. However, it became easier to just do bull riding.
When asked why he wanted to compete in Toughest Cowboy, Schumacher said, “I liked the idea of competing in three events again and I want to win the ranch”.
